Playstation Global Head of R&D Discusses PSVR for Next Generation Console

Playstation’s Global head of R&D Dominic Mallinson has detailed some of Sony’s plans for the PS VR hardware in the future.

In an interview with CNET, Mallinson discussed not just the PSVR but Playstation’s upcoming console as well. Despite the console’s upgrades, the PSVR is likely not going to get a new headset when next-gen consoles arrive. “There’s no reason for us to coincide it with a new console,” Mallinson says. He feels there’s no reason to ask people to buy a new console and VR headset all at once, “it’s good to have a little breathing space”.

That’s not to say a new headset isn’t in the cards. Mallinson also spoke of several upgrades and changes Playstation is looking to make to the headset. In terms of hardware they “want it to be lighter weight, and easier to put on, less cables, less mess”. The Playstation Move controllers will also get an upgrade eventually, he confirms.

In terms of technology, eye tracking is something Mallinson believes will become standard in all VR headsets. It allows for better game performance and could help the headset “perform more like a high-end PC” CNET notes. Mixed reality is something Mallinson finds interesting, like the Oculus Quest can draw boundaries on the real world.

While the article is an interesting look into what Playstation is considering for the future, it doesn’t seem like something we’ll get soon. Sony’s next console is a ways out and the next PSVR will probably be even farther.
