The Hollywood Reporter has detailed the launch of PlayStation Productions, a branch of Sony Interactive Entertainment focused on adapting Sony game franchises to television and movies.
Asad Qizilbash is the studio head with Shawn Layden, SIE chairman of Worldwide Studios, overseeing it. With over 100 original PlayStation properties, Layden feels, “now is a good time to look at other media opportunities”. The company is looking into many options and mentions streaming along with film and television.
Qizilbash says that instead of licensing out IP’s, PlayStation Productions will develop and produce itself. He also mentions talking to several film producers including Marvel’s Kevin Feige. While slow to say they’re following in Marvel’s footsteps, the studio is taking inspiration from the MCU.

He also feels now is the best time to be launching PlayStation Productions because many filmmakers are gamers. “You can see just by watching older video game adaptations that the screenwriter or director didn’t understand that world or the gaming thing,” Layden adds.
Layden also cites PlayStations large library of games such as Crash Bandicoot, Uncharted and God of War. Both he and Qizilbash see that diversity as a strength for the company and its projects.
