Atari, the company that brought you Pong, Space Invaders, and Missle Command, has announced a new console for release in Spring 2019- the Atari VCS.
Designed in California by Atari, they have teamed up with AMD to bring the classic console into a new generation. The VCS will support 4K, HDR, and 60 FPS content thanks to AMD Radeon Graphics Technology, and will also house onboard and expandable memory, Bluetooth 5.0, dual-band WiFi, and USB 3.0 support, as well as Open Linux OS. These new consoles come with the classically-styled but updated joystick controller, as well as a new modern controller being styled and developed by Power A, which will be available as a package with the console and as standalone purchases.

Not wanting to forget its roots, the VCS will house the Atari Vault- over 100 classic Atari games like Breakout, Missile Command, and Yars’ Revenge, with more titles being added. Jumping into the new generation, it will support a full array of modern and indie titles as well, which will be announced at later dates. As with similar consoles of the modern era, it will not just be for games- it is aiming to become an entertainment hub for the home with access to streaming and media services.
The Atari VCS will be available for pre-order exclusively on Indiegogo starting on May 30, 2018. A collector’s edition with a classic wood-styled front panel will be available as a time-limited release, but the black onyx version will be available for the duration of the campaign starting at $199. You can also order the Classic Joystick controller and Modern Controllers as accessories during the pre-sale. The first wave of consoles is expected to ship Spring of 2019.
